Nuri rocket lifts off at 12:25 with 15 satellites on fifth flight
En breve
South Korea's Nuri launch vehicle lifted off at 12:25 local time on Oct 7 from the second pad of the Naro Space Center in Goheung, carrying five ultra-small cluster satellites and 10 cubesats. Kerosene and liquid oxygen loading was completed by 11:25 and the space agency said preparations had gone normally. Outlets differ on the outcome: Newsis reported 14 of the 15 satellites separated, leaving the cubesat 퍼샛-02 attached, while Chosun Ilbo said all 15 payload satellites separated and the flight was completed.

Nuri, South Korea's home-built launch vehicle, lifted off at 12:25 local time on Oct 7 from the second pad of the Naro Space Center in Goheung, carrying 15 satellites, according to dispatches from several outlets. The Korea AeroSpace Administration and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute had fixed the launch time at 12:25 after a launch management committee reviewed the rocket's technical readiness, weather conditions, the space environment and the risk of collision with other space objects. [ 4 , 6 , 8 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]
Preparations moved through the morning. Kerosene loading into the fuel tank began at about 09:40 and was completed around 10:50; loading of the oxidizer, liquid oxygen, was scheduled to start at about 10:15, with each operation expected to take roughly 70 minutes. Yonhap reported both fuel and oxidizer loading complete by 11:25, and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported the kerosene tank charging complete with oxidizer still being supplied. Oh Tae-seok, head of the Korea AeroSpace Administration, said at an 08:45 briefing that “so far launch preparations are proceeding normally on the planned schedule and no technical problem has occurred”. Computer-controlled countdown and automatic launch operation were to begin at 12:15. [ 6 , 8 , 11 , 12 ]
ZDNet Korea described the flight sequence: first-stage separation at 123 seconds at an altitude of 67 km, then fairing and second-stage separation at 233 seconds, ejection of the ultra-small cluster satellites at an altitude of 575 km at intervals of 35 to 40 seconds, and separation of the 10 cubesats in five rounds of two at 995 seconds. Newsis reported that the third-stage engine was to cut off about 761 seconds after liftoff at an altitude of 575 km. [ 8 , 15 ]
The payload consisted of five ultra-small cluster satellites and 10 cubesats. The outlets differ on the outcome of the separation sequence. Newsis reported that 14 of the 15 satellites separated and that the cubesat 퍼샛-02 did not, quoting Park Jong-chan, who said at a briefing that “there were 10 cubesats in total and nine of them separated, but 퍼샛-02 did not separate”, adding that the rocket had sent a normal separation signal. Chosun Ilbo, in a photo report, said the rocket separated all 15 payload satellites and completed its flight. The documents do not reconcile the two accounts. [ 3 , 14 , 16 ]
ZDNet Korea reported that Nuri is 47.2 m long, weighs 200 tonnes, carries 56.5 tonnes of fuel and 126 tonnes of oxidizer and has a payload capacity of 2.2 tonnes, with a target altitude of 570 km in a sun-synchronous orbit; its first stage has four 75-tonne-class liquid engines, its second stage one, and its third stage a 7-tonne engine. The outlet said the vehicle was developed at a cost of 796.88 billion won by the Korea AeroSpace Administration as lead ministry, together with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and private companies, aiming at repeated launches for government demand and at transferring launch-vehicle technology to the private sector to foster system-integration companies. It added that tracking used radars and remote data-receiving antennas at the Naro Space Center and Jeju, plus an antenna at a Palau tracking station, with the Naro center able to track the vehicle up to 3,000 km. [ 15 ]
Por qué importa
The fifth flight is part of a government programme that aims at repeated launches for state demand and at transferring launch-vehicle technology to private companies to build up system-integration firms, according to ZDNet Korea. Reports that one cubesat may not have separated, if confirmed, would bear on the payload operators rather than on the rocket's own flight, which the documents describe as completed.

Aún sin aclarar
- Whether all 15 satellites separated from the rocket. Newsis reported that 14 of 15 separated and that the cubesat 퍼샛-02 did not, citing a briefing by Park Jong-chan, while Chosun Ilbo's photo report said the rocket separated all 15 payload satellites and completed its flight. The documents do not resolve the difference.
- The state of 퍼샛-02 after the reported separation signal. Newsis, the only outlet reporting this, says the rocket sent a normal separation signal to 퍼샛-02 but its account is truncated, so the cause and the satellite's condition are not stated.
- When fuel loading was completed. Kukmin Ilbo's 02:32 headline said fuel charging was complete and final procedures were under way, while other outlets report that kerosene loading began at about 09:40, a timing the documents do not reconcile.
