State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin congratulated President Vladimir Putin on his birthday, TASS, RIA Novosti and Vedomosti reported. Putin turned 74 on 7 October, according to Vedomosti. In his message Volodin said Putin “saved Russia from destruction, returned respect to our state, made it strong”. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Vedomosti, Volodin said that in the 1990s Russia was “on the brink of existence” and that the situation changed after Putin came to power. The speaker said the president created an effective political system and economic model that allow the country to overcome emerging challenges, told Putin “Your victories are Russia's victories”, and wished him the fulfilment of his plans and wishes. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the president would spend his birthday on work matters, with a series of international telephone calls and other events in his schedule, Vedomosti reported. Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov had earlier spoken of congratulatory telegrams from foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. On 7 October, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also congratulated Putin, according to Vedomosti. [ 3 ]
