First wind farm in Tibet's Ngari region enters grid-connection commissioning
En breve
The CGN Ngari Gaize 50 MW wind project, the first wind power project in Tibet's Ngari (Ali) region, has recently finished hoisting all its turbines and has entered grid-connection commissioning, CCTV News reported. The project sits at 4,600 to 4,800 metres, has ten 5 MW turbines, and is planned to start grid operation by the end of 2026.

The CGN Ngari Gaize 50,000 kW wind project, the first wind power project in Tibet's Ngari (Ali) region, has recently completed hoisting of all its turbines and fully entered the grid-connection commissioning stage, according to a CCTV News report carried by IT Home, Jiemian and Yicai. The project is planned to begin grid operation by the end of 2026. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The project is located on the Ngari snow plateau at an altitude of 4,600 to 4,800 metres and consists of 10 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 5 MW each. According to the reports, once at full capacity it can generate up to 180 million kWh of electricity a year, equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 150,000 tonnes, and will help fill a gap in clean energy supply in the region. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The reports describe difficult construction conditions. The air at ultra-high altitude is thin, cold and low in oxygen, and from mid-September local temperatures fell below 0°C. Combined with strong winds and hail, this left limited windows for transporting large components and hoisting turbines. The project monitored wind speeds in real time and adjusted its construction plans to use suitable weather windows to finish hoisting all the turbines. [ 1 , 2 ]
More than 60 construction workers remained on site during the National Day holiday. Work is now under way on project quality acceptance and commissioning of booster station equipment in preparation for grid operation. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
IT Home added details it said came from China General Nuclear group materials. Planned total investment is 280 million yuan, and the project includes, besides the 10 turbines, a 10 MW energy storage system, a supporting 110 kV booster station and collector lines. IT Home reported that the project uses SI-19050 turbines customised for the 5,000-metre-class altitude of Ngari, which it described as well suited to plateau conditions and reliable. It also reported that the first turbine was hoisted in July this year. These details did not appear in the Jiemian or Yicai reports. [ 1 ]
Por qué importa
According to the reports, the project is expected to generate up to 180 million kWh a year once at full capacity and to fill a gap in clean energy supply in the region. It is the first wind project in Ngari, so the reports present it as a step in bringing wind power to the ultra-high-altitude area.
