Azerbaijan intends to start buying gas from Russia's Gazprom again, Elshad Nasirov, vice-president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), said on October 16 at Russian Energy Week (REW-2026), Interfax, Vedomosti and Kommersant reported. TASS also reported SOCAR's intention to buy gas from Gazprom. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

"We can proudly say that our cooperation with a giant like Gazprom is a very correct example, because SOCAR is probably the only company in the world that first bought gas from Gazprom, then supplied gas to Gazprom, and now wants to buy gas again," Nasirov said, according to Vedomosti, which cited Vesti. In the version reported by Interfax, he added that SOCAR now swaps gas with Gazprom, and joked that selling gas to Gazprom is considerably more pleasant than buying gas from it. [ 2 , 3 ]

Nasirov told journalists that there was nothing concrete yet on possible volumes and timing. "We bought gas, sold gas to Gazprom, did seasonal swaps, this is a normal working process," he said, according to Interfax. Kommersant, citing TASS, quoted him as saying: "This is simply a statement of the fact that we both buy and sell gas. There are no concrete plans." Kommersant reported that he did not specify the volume of planned purchases. [ 2 , 4 ]

Coverage differed in emphasis. Headlines spoke of Azerbaijan intending, or in one Kommersant report proposing, to resume purchases, while Nasirov's own quoted remarks described no concrete plans. Kommersant reported that, according to Nasirov, the interaction between the two companies is an example of successful partnership. [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Kommersant reported that cooperation between Gazprom and SOCAR began more than 20 years ago, and its text also refers to an expansion of the partnership in August 2024, including on the North–South project. Vedomosti noted that on September 25 it became known that the Gazprom group increased pipeline supplies of Russian gas to neighbouring countries by 29% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period of 2025, mainly due to higher sales to Kazakhstan. [ 3 , 4 ]

Por qué importa

Nasirov described SOCAR as having first bought gas from Gazprom, then supplied gas to it, and now wanting to buy again. With no volumes, dates or concrete plans given, the statement signals intent rather than a deal.
