Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said he is considering a run for president in 2028, in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Kennedy said his plans “right now” are to run for re-election to the Senate in 2028, but that if he does not think he “can be effective” in the Senate he “would consider” a White House bid. He said he had not made a decision. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 ]

Asked about the possibility, Kennedy said: “On my side of the aisle, if a bunch of goobers run, and I think they’re goobers, and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running. But right now, I’m running for reelection,” he told host Kristen Welker, according to The Hill. The New York Post quoted the same remarks. [ 3 , 5 ]

The Hill reported that Kennedy entered the Senate in 2017 and has campaigned for Senate Republicans in several states this year, including a visit to Nebraska to support Sen. Pete Ricketts. It said Kennedy will be 77 on Jan. 20, 2029, the date of the next scheduled presidential inauguration, which would make him the third-oldest president at the time of inauguration. [ 5 ]

The Hill also reported that Vice President Vance leads in most polls of the potential 2028 Republican field, citing a survey by Harvard University, the Harris Poll and HarrisX conducted in late September that found Vance leading Donald Trump Jr. by 15 points among Republican respondents. It said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and political commentator Tucker Carlson rounded out the top six. [ 5 ]

The New York Post reported that Kennedy also defended Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) after President Trump released Cotton’s personal cellphone number in a rebuke over Cotton’s blocking of the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill to make daylight saving time permanent. “Every now and then, there are disputes in Congress that have existential significance for the future of Western civilization. Daylight Savings Time is not one of them,” Kennedy said. “Tom Cotton feels strongly about it. Tom is a rock star senator.” [ 3 ]

Of the president, Kennedy said he “can be tempestuous” and added, “I don’t think he should have given out Tom’s cellphone number,” the New York Post reported. Cotton, who chairs the Senate Republican Conference, is up for re-election on Nov. 3, the Post said. [ 3 ]

The New York Post noted that Kennedy’s colleague, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), was defeated in a primary earlier this year after Trump backed Rep. Julia Letlow, and that Kennedy had questioned former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over publicly funded ads shortly before her firing. [ 3 ]

Por qué importa

Kennedy is a sitting Republican senator openly weighing a presidential bid while saying his default plan is to stay in the Senate, a signal of an unsettled 2028 Republican field. Vice President Vance leads most polling of that field, according to The Hill, so any additional candidate would enter a race with a clear early front-runner. Kennedy also used the appearance to criticise the president over his treatment of a Senate colleague, a rare public break inside the party.

Medios económicosAll four documents are from outlets labelled business type, and all build their coverage on the same NBC “Meet the Press” interview. The two NBC News items are short reports that Kennedy is weighing a 2028 run and had not decided. The New York Post led with his colourful phrasing about “goobers,” his defence of Sen. Tom Cotton and his criticism of President Trump over publishing Cotton’s cellphone number, plus Louisiana political background. The Hill added age, Senate tenure and 2028 primary polling context.
