The Russian Transport Ministry said the Liberian-flagged tanker Aframax Rio, carrying oil, was attacked by unmanned boats in the Black Sea off the coast near Sochi. Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin chaired a staff meeting on dealing with the aftermath of the attack, the ministry said. RBC reported, citing the ministry, that the tanker ablaze near Sochi had been attacked by drones. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
According to the ministry, oil is burning in open water. Firefighting can begin only after the fire's intensity falls enough for rescue vessels to approach the tanker safely, and the ministry said it has sufficient forces and means to deal with the consequences. The ministry said the crew of 23 people, all citizens of India, was rescued and that, according to preliminary information, there were no injured. [ 1 , 3 ]
Sochi mayor Andrei Proshunin said Roshydromet is carrying out an operational calculation of the direction of combustion products, while an automatic monitoring post continuously tracks air and water quality. He said a detailed analysis and visual monitoring would begin early in the morning. The city's operational staff decided to temporarily restrict access to seafront embankments and beach areas; Proshunin urged residents and visitors not to put themselves at risk and to wait for an official decision on reopening them, adding that the actions of all services were being coordinated. [ 3 ]
Dmitry Plishkin, head of the federal territory Sirius, had earlier reported the tanker fire in the Black Sea. He said pollution concentrations in Sirius were below the maximum permissible level and that there was no threat to people's health. Kommersant reported that open burning of oil continued in the water area. [ 1 ]
The documents do not say who carried out the attack, and none of the outlets attributes responsibility. No assessment of the extent of any oil pollution, of final damage, or of how long the fire will burn is given in the available reports; the statement that there were no injured is described as preliminary. Почему это важно
The attack on a foreign-flagged tanker in the Black Sea raises questions about shipping safety and about who is responsible, which the documents do not answer. With oil burning at sea near a resort coast, local authorities are monitoring air and water and have closed seafront areas, so the incident carries both security and environmental consequences for the region.
