President Vladimir Putin will mark his 74th birthday on 7 October with a series of international telephone calls, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Peskov told a briefing that the calls would come “first of all” on the occasion of the birthday, and that there would also be other events, which he said would be announced the following day. Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said several telephone conversations with foreign leaders were planned. [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]
Peskov said the day is rarely entirely a holiday for the head of state. Interfax reported that Putin typically spends his birthday at work and on the phone. Last year, the Kommersant report notes, Putin met the permanent members of the Security Council in addition to the international calls. [ 2 , 5 ]
According to Interfax, citing Ushakov, Putin has also received numerous written congratulations, among them a telegram from Chinese President Xi Jinping. No other document named congratulators or confirmed the telegram. [ 5 ]
Peskov said congratulations from family and close ones matter to the president, and that he often manages to see them only in the evening, once work is finished. [ 5 ]
