The autumn festival Nagasaki Kunchi opened on 7 October at Suwa Shrine in Nagasaki, with the sound of flutes and drums and dance performances drawing cheers from those watching, according to Tokyo Shimbun. Nippon TV News reported that six dance districts (odorimachi) presented their traditional performances as dedications at the shrine. [ 1 , 3 ]
Among the performances, Ichiban-machi presented a new nagauta piece, and Imago-machi performed a hon'odori dance, with dancers moving to nagauta singing and shamisen accompaniment. Aburaya-machi's Kawabune, performed with a fast boat-turning routine, drew the audience, with the amiuchi-sendo netting a carp in a single sweep that brought cheers for a good catch. [ 3 ]
Motofuna-machi performed the Tojin-bune festival, a piece recreating trade with Tang China in the Edo period, in which a boat is towed around while being moved forward. Tokyo Shimbun reported that the Tojin-bune of Motofuna-machi was paraded at Suwa Shrine on the morning of 7 October. Uwamachi performed its Kkokkodesho for the second time, throwing its float high into the air and catching it one-handed. [ 1 , 3 ]
Kajiya-machi dedicated the Shichifukujin Hosen, featuring a hon'odori of the seven gods of good fortune and a seven-and-a-half rotation boat turn. Chikugo-machi closed the dedications with a dragon dance, in which three dragons moved vigorously and the venue rose in excitement. Nippon TV News said the festival runs until Friday 9 October and that the town is filled with the Kunchi mood. It added that NIB would broadcast a Kunchi special programme from 16:45 on 7 October, focusing on the eve of the festival. [ 3 ]
