France's Mistral released Mistral Large 4, its largest open-weight AI model, on Oct 6 foreign local time, according to Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo. The model, nicknamed “Chonk”, lets users download the parameters, or weights, that determine computation and customize them on their own servers, with general public availability set for Oct 27. Mistral said in a statement that organizations from financial services to manufacturing and the public sector can manage intelligence, data, computing and operations on their own core infrastructure without exposing their most valuable knowledge. The launch is Mistral's first product release since May and its first since it announced last month a €3bn (about 4.7 trillion won) funding round led by Samsung, described in the reports as the largest ever fundraising by a European tech company. Mistral positions open-weight models against the closed-model strategies of US leaders OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, while Chinese companies including DeepSeek and Moonshot mainly use open strategies, the reports said. Chosun Ilbo said the company is targeting government and corporate demand for “AI sovereignty” — less dependence on US and Chinese firms — and is offering a European alternative in an open-model market where Chinese companies have been strong.
