Russia says no pause in US contacts, sees no US activity on Ukraine
Коротко
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow sees no particular activity from Washington on settling the crisis around Ukraine and that no pause has occurred in Russia-US contacts. He said the US role in influencing both Kyiv and Brussels remains key, and that no plans currently exist for a trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine meeting. He also noted that on October 6 Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the situation was not moving toward ending the conflict, while President Donald Trump said a settlement was near.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told journalists that Moscow currently sees no particular activity from Washington on settling the crisis around Ukraine, Interfax and Vedomosti reported. He said there is no pause in Russia-US contacts on the issue and that no plans currently exist for a trilateral meeting involving Russia, the United States and Ukraine. Vedomosti added that, according to Ryabkov, Moscow remains open to such contacts. [ 4 , 5 ]
Ryabkov said the US retains a key role in the settlement process because it can influence both Kyiv and Brussels, Vedomosti reported. In Interfax’s account, he said it was for the Americans to comment on their own “brokering”, which he described as publicly contradictory, and that after the summit in Anchorage the US administration, owing to what he called the destructive influence of the European “war party”, did not turn out to be able to stick to the understandings reached there. Asked whether this meant the administration had abandoned that brokering, he said “rather no than yes”, but that no particular activity is being observed now. He said this means only that the “special military operation” continues in line with the instructions given by the president. [ 4 ]
As evidence that contacts have not stopped, Ryabkov pointed to the September 23 meeting between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which he said devoted significant attention to the Ukrainian settlement, Interfax reported. Vedomosti said the meeting took place in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and that Lavrov said afterwards that Washington still showed interest in assisting a settlement, with the sides agreeing to continue contacts through their foreign ministries. [ 4 , 5 ]
Vedomosti also reported that on October 6 Rubio said the situation in Ukraine was not currently developing toward an end to the conflict, while the same day US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in a swift settlement, saying work on it was continuing. The documents do not reconcile the two statements. [ 5 ]
Почему это важно
The remarks are the latest public signal on the state of Russia-US channels on Ukraine, and they come as US officials themselves give conflicting assessments of progress. They indicate that talks continue at the foreign-ministry level, but that Moscow sees no active US push and no current format for three-way talks.
