The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo drew 217,235 visitors over the three-day National Foundation Day holiday, the organizing committee said, according to Yonhap. Daily figures were 35,412 on Oct 3, 131,905 on Oct 4 and 49,918 on Oct 5. Cumulative attendance from Sept 5 to Oct 5 reached 718,840, with the Oct 4 figure close to double the 67,491 recorded on Chuseok day, Sept 25, setting a new single-day record. [ 3 ]

Newsis reported that the expo had passed its halfway point and was picking up speed in its closing stretch, publishing organizing-committee photographs of a full expo parking lot and of visitors entering and watching the “Prime Concert in Yeosu” on the afternoon of Oct 4. Yonhap said waiting tickets for the roughly 4,000 seats at the open stage sold out early, and that the concert's light sticks stood out against the night sea at Yeosu. [ 2 , 3 ]

Seoul Shinmun reported that about 80,000 people visited over two days of the first October holiday. That report appears to cover a different window than the committee figures carried by Yonhap, and the documents do not reconcile the two sets of numbers. [ 1 , 3 ]

The expo site closed on Oct 6 for the day and began preparing its second half. The overseas local government pavilions at the International Exchange Island will be entirely replaced with those of 17 countries and local governments, Yonhap reported, including Hawaii in the United States, Havana in Cuba, Zanzibar in Tanzania and Kochi in Japan. Landscape lighting at the Island Gate and the lawn plaza will be strengthened, and heating and other facilities will be serviced for colder weather. [ 3 ]

Over the coming Hangul Day holiday, the organizing committee expects another run of crowds with a special stage, “The Big Show,” featuring television host Park Kyung-lim and musical actress Ivy, Yonhap reported. The expo runs until Dec 4 under the theme “islands, connecting the sea and the future,” at the Dolsan Jinmo main site, the Yeosu Expo site and the Gaedo and Geumodo areas. [ 3 ]

Why it matters

The holiday attendance figures are the organizing committee's evidence that the expo, which runs until Dec 4, has built momentum at its halfway point. The second-half revamp — replacing the international pavilions and upgrading lighting and heating — is aimed at sustaining visits through colder autumn weather. As a national-level exposition, its attendance is a measure of the event's cost and planning being borne out.
