Rospotrebnadzor says sanitary situation stable in Irkutsk region after illness case
In short
Rospotrebnadzor said the sanitary-epidemiological situation in Russia’s Irkutsk region and the cities of Irkutsk and Shelekhov is stable, according to TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax. Interfax reported that the assessment follows a case of “pneumonia of unspecified etiology” in an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East. The agency said expanded tests found no microorganisms linked to the employee’s professional work and that no infectious disease complaints were registered among institute staff over the past 10 days.

Rospotrebnadzor said the sanitary-epidemiological situation in Irkutsk Oblast and the cities of Irkutsk and Shelekhov is stable, TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax reported. All three outlets attributed the assessment to the federal agency. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Interfax said the agency tied the special set of measures to a case of illness in an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East, with the diagnosis “pneumonia of unspecified etiology”. According to the Rospotrebnadzor press service, the measures were organised “immediately and in full” under sanitary legislation once information about the case was received. [ 3 ]
The agency said expanded tests on material from the patient found no microorganisms connected with her professional activity, and that no infectious disease complaints had been registered among institute staff over the previous 10 days. A commission checking compliance with biological safety requirements at the institute found no emergency situations in work with pathogenic microorganisms, Interfax reported, adding that the commission’s conclusions were confirmed by an expert commission sent to the institute on the instructions of Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova. [ 3 ]
The agency said the widest possible circle of people who had contact with the patient was identified and placed under medical observation in hospital with daily laboratory tests. Among them, 2 cases of Covid-19 and 2 cases of rhinovirus infection were found, while no other infectious disease agents were detected, and no contact showed health changes linked to infectious pathology, according to the statement. [ 3 ]
The agency also said seasonal acute respiratory viral infections are being registered among the population of Irkutsk and Shelekhov. TASS and RIA Novosti reported only the stable assessment without the details of the institute case, which appeared in Interfax’s account of the same statement. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Why it matters
The Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute works with pathogenic microorganisms, so an illness case involving a staff member drew a public assessment from the federal health watchdog, carried by state and business media. The documents present the findings as reassurance that the situation is stable and give no indication of wider risk to the public, and both the case and the response are local to the Irkutsk region.
