Saudi Arabia will begin procedures to regularise the status of all Yemeni nationals staying in the kingdom illegally, the Interior Ministry said. The ministry said the move followed a directive from King Salman bin Abdulaziz, issued in response to a request from Rashad Al Alimi, chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council. [ 2 , 3 ]

The Interior Ministry said the process would be carried out in coordination with the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Human Resources and Social Development, as well as the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority. It described the measure as an extension of Saudi Arabia's continued support and fraternal stance towards the Yemeni people. [ 2 ]

Yemeni nationals seeking to benefit must hold a valid Yemeni passport, the ministry said. The date for the start of the procedures, along with the rules and requirements governing the process, will be announced through the official accounts of the General Directorate of Passports and other relevant authorities. The ministry did not specify how long the regularisation period would run or provide details on the categories of residency status that would be covered, Gulf News reported. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The National reported that the announcement came a day after Mr Alimi declared all-out war on Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and said the decision could have implications beyond the legal status of those affected. It reported that Saudi Arabia is home to an estimated 1.9 million Yemenis and accounts for about 62 per cent of remittances sent to Yemen, making it by far the most important source of income sent home by Yemenis abroad. Legal status could give irregular residents greater access to formal employment and financial services, potentially making it easier to send money to relatives in Yemen, the outlet said. [ 3 ]

Ahmed Obaid bin Dagher, chairman of Yemen's Shura Council, welcomed the decision, saying it would have a significant effect on thousands of Yemenis and their families. He said the council's leadership and members welcomed what he described as the generous directives of King Salman and expressed deep thanks and appreciation to the kingdom and its leadership for what he called a fraternal stance. [ 3 ]

Por qué importa

Saudi Arabia hosts a large Yemeni population and is described as the main source of remittances sent home to Yemen, so a legal status change could affect access to formal work and financial services for those covered. It also comes as Riyadh states support for Yemenis, and The National reported it followed a request from Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council.
