Jung Kwan Jang, a South Korean women's professional volleyball club, announced on Oct. 6 that it has appointed Kwon Soon-chan, 51, as its new head coach, according to Yonhap, Hankook Ilbo and Seoul Economic Daily. The club said Kwon is a coach who draws out growth through guidance tailored to each player's characteristics and that it judged him the right person to make the club take a new leap. A club official told NoCut News that Kwon's extensive coaching experience, his ability to develop players and his communication-centred leadership made him the right person to restore the organisation and competitiveness of a squad that had been shaken. Kwon said he feels happy and a heavy sense of responsibility, and that he will communicate actively with the players to maximise their strengths and repay fans with improvement in every match. The appointment fills a coaching vacancy left by a controversy within the squad. Yonhap, Hankook Ilbo and Seoul Economic Daily reported that the club publicly apologised after an incident at a team dinner in January became known in July, that the coach involved submitted a resignation and left the team, and that head coach Ko Hee-jin stepped down in August saying he would take responsibility. NoCut News described the incident as an inappropriate act by a coaching staff member toward a player at a dinner held during the All-Star break in January, and said the club separated those involved and reported the matter to the Korea Volleyball Federation and the Sports Ethics Centre. [ 2 , 5 , 7 , 8 ]
The documents differ on when the club learned of the incident. NoCut News said the club identified it belatedly in May and that Ko, who was in the same dinner venue but said he did not directly witness the staff member's act, was excluded from on-field duties from May as the person ultimately responsible for managing the squad. Yonhap, Hankook Ilbo and Seoul Economic Daily said the matter became known in July. NoCut News also reported that Ko offered to resign shortly before the season was due to start. [ 2 , 5 , 7 , 8 ]
Kwon built his coaching career after retiring as a player, working as a high school coach and then as a coach at Woori Capital, Korean Air and KB Insurance, Yonhap reported. He led the men's club KB Insurance for two years from 2017 and took charge of the women's club Heungkuk Life from 2022, stepping down in January 2023 during the season. Yonhap said the appointment marks his return to the professional stage after three years and nine months. Seoul Economic Daily reported that Kwon played for Samsung Fire from 1997 to 2002, and that his leadership being recognised in both the men's and women's games scored highly in his selection. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 ]
Hankook Ilbo and Seoul Economic Daily both noted that the club finished last season at the bottom of the league. The documents give different dates for the club's next matches: NoCut News said Jung Kwan Jang is preparing for the 2026 KOVO Cup on Oct. 11 and the opening of the 2026-2027 V-League season, while Hankook Ilbo said Kwon will focus on lifting the team's mood ahead of the regular league opening on Oct. 31. [ 5 , 7 , 8 ]
Por qué importa
Jung Kwan Jang is rebuilding its coaching staff after an incident within the squad became public this year and its previous head coach resigned, so the appointment decides who leads the team into the coming season. The club has said it wants a fresh start, and Kwon's experience in both the men's and women's leagues matches that aim, but the documents give no contract terms or season targets. Interest is largely limited to domestic volleyball audiences.
