Wil Lutz kicked a 53-yard field goal in overtime to give the Denver Broncos a 17-14 home victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. The winning kick followed an interception by Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, who picked off a Sam Darnold pass at Seattle’s 43-yard line. Denver gained eight yards in three plays before Lutz’s attempt. [ 1 , 4 , 6 ]
Seattle had forced overtime with a late fourth-quarter rally. Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold with 1:25 remaining, but Denver’s offense went three-and-out, taking only 28 seconds off the clock. Rashid Shaheed returned the ensuing punt 31 yards, and Darnold moved Seattle into range for Jason Myers to make a tying 34-yard field goal with three seconds left. [ 4 ]
The Broncos had led 14-3 at halftime, with J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey finishing touchdown drives. Seattle narrowed the deficit to 14-11 in the fourth quarter through a one-yard George Holani touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass from Darnold to Shaheed. Denver quarterback Bo Nix finished with 107 passing yards, while Darnold threw two interceptions. Shaheed also lost a fumble in the first half. [ 4 , 6 ]
The result left Denver at 4-2 and Seattle at 3-3. The Seahawks lost for the second time in five days and matched their total number of losses from the previous season, when they won the Super Bowl. Darnold took responsibility for the overtime interception, saying he had got greedy and should have tried a shorter pass to Cooper Kupp. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said the team needed to work out why the ball was in jeopardy so often on offense.
