UAE-built Altair-1 satellite reaches orbit as first of 10-satellite constellation
In short
Altair-1, described by the outlets as the first commercial satellite built in the UAE, launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It deployed, acquired a signal and is now in commissioning, according to Orbitworks and official reports. It is the first of ten AI-enabled Earth observation satellites in Orbitworks' Altair constellation, with the remaining nine due through 2027, and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development said it has secured dedicated capacity on the network.

Altair-1, described by the outlets as the first commercial satellite built in the UAE, launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The National, WAM, Gulf News and Emirates 24|7 put the launch at 11:32am Gulf Standard Time on Friday. Economy Middle East said the satellite launched on October 1 at 11:32 a.m. Pacific time, or 10:32 p.m. UAE time. WAM, Gulf News, Emirates 24|7 and Economy Middle East said Altair-1 successfully deployed, acquired a signal and is now in commissioning. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 8 ]
The satellite is the first of ten AI-enabled Earth observation satellites forming the Altair constellation, built by Abu Dhabi-based Orbitworks, which says the remaining nine will follow through 2027. Altair-1 was designed, assembled, integrated and tested at Orbitworks' facility in Abu Dhabi and flown to California in August. Each satellite carries five integrated sensors — optical, shortwave infrared, thermal, hyperspectral and radio frequency — along with onboard NVIDIA GPUs that WAM, Gulf News and Emirates 24|7 said turn the data into analysis-ready intelligence within minutes rather than the hours typical of ground-based processing. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 8 ]
Orbitworks was formed as a partnership between Abu Dhabi's Marlan Space and San Francisco's Loft Orbital and opened a satellite assembly, integration and testing centre in Kezad, The National reported. Loft Orbital provided integration support and manifested Altair-1 on the SpaceX mission, according to Economy Middle East. [ 2 , 5 ]
Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, congratulated the Orbitworks team. He said the launch “reflects the strength of the UAE's national space ecosystem and its growing capacity to develop and manufacture advanced space technologies”, cited the National Space Strategy 2031, and said it would advance the country's ambition to become one of the world's ten leading space economies by 2031. WAM said he highlighted the private sector's role in building advanced, scalable national space industries. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 8 ]
Separately, Abu Dhabi Fund for Development said it marked the launch of its first dedicated satellite capacity through Orbitworks' Altair constellation. ADFD Director-General Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi said the capability “strengthens our ability to oversee projects with greater precision”, and Aletihad reported that once commissioned it will allow the fund to task satellite imagery, access high-resolution Earth Observation data and connect to Orbitworks' secure digital mission control platform for monitoring projects, infrastructure and environmental conditions across multiple countries and regions. Why it matters
The documents present the launch as evidence that the UAE can design, build and test commercial satellites domestically, with Orbitworks citing export potential and the UAE Space Agency chairman linking it to the National Space Strategy 2031 and an ambition to be among the world's ten leading space economies by 2031. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development announcement indicates the constellation already has an institutional customer for its Earth observation data, suggesting demand for the network beyond its first satellite. International relevance is largely limited to the space and development-finance sectors.

Still unclear
- The date and local time of the launch. The National and Gulf News put the launch at 11.32am Gulf Standard Time on Friday; WAM and Emirates 24|7 say 11:32 a.m. PT/GST without distinguishing the two; Economy Middle East says it launched on October 1 at 11:32 a.m. Pacific time, or 10:32 p.m. UAE time. The outlets do not reconcile these versions.
- The value, duration and terms of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development's dedicated satellite capacity. WAM's headline and Aletihad's report describe the capability but give no financial or contractual details.
- The full planned capabilities of the Altair constellation. The article texts from The National, WAM, Gulf News and Emirates 24|7 end mid-sentence, so their descriptions of the constellation at full strength in 2027 are incomplete.
