Caleb Flynn, 40, a former Ohio music pastor and onetime “American Idol” contestant, was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. Judge Jeannine Pratt of Miami County Common Pleas Court imposed the sentence, saying Flynn posed the highest risk of harm to the public. “The layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty are hard to fathom,” Pratt said, according to NBC News. “And you used your faith to manipulate the lives of others.” ABC News reported Pratt told Flynn he “could have walked away” and said that “through your greed, your selfishness, your lust, and your cruelty, you chose to take Ashley’s life.” [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]

A jury convicted Flynn last week on nine charges, including aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence, Fox News reported, after roughly two and a half hours of deliberations. Prosecutors said Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she slept in bed on Feb. 16, then staged their Tipp City home to look like a break-in through the garage and called 911 to claim an intruder had killed her, according to ABC News and CBS News. He was arrested three days later, ABC News reported. The New York Post quoted prosecutor Paul Watkins as saying Flynn “immediately introduced an unknown intruder into the story and attempted to transform himself from Ashley’s killer into another supposed victim.” [ 4 , 6 , 7 , 9 ]

Before sentencing, Flynn told the court he was innocent, crying and shaking as he read from papers, NBC News reported. “I have unfortunately lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years, but as I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” CBS News quoted him as saying. “I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to,” he said. The New York Post reported Flynn also said, “What I am most ashamed of and regret most of all are the awful things I said about Ashley.” Family members read written statements from his daughters, who NBC News said were 9 and 11 when their mother was killed; one letter said, “I love you deeply with all my heart and it’s sad that you can’t love anyone but yourself,” and the other said, “It was your choice to have that affair.” [ 5 , 7 , 9 ]

The prosecution’s case centred on Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, who testified at trial. The Associated Press reported she met Flynn in 2022 while she was a 20-year-old intern at his church and the affair lasted more than a year; CNN reported she was a 21-year-old intern, that the relationship became intimate in the spring of 2024 and that it lasted nearly two years, and that prosecutors said the two exchanged more than 100,000 messages within a year. CNN reported Botner read aloud messages in which Flynn expressed hatred for his wife, including one from August 2025: “I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.” She testified she told him to get a divorce instead, and that after Ashley Flynn’s death he hugged her and said, “It didn’t happen the way we thought it would, did it?” The Associated Press reported prosecutors said Flynn texted his lover the night before the shooting: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.” [ 1 , 2 ]

Fox News reported that Flynn’s attorneys asked the judge for a sentence that would allow parole after time served, citing his lack of criminal history, his years in ministry and letters of support from relatives, including his parents Mike and Kim Flynn, who wrote that his remorse was genuine. Prosecutors disputed that account, arguing he had planned the killing for months and had shown no remorse. Fox News also reported that his attorneys said he maintains his innocence and intends to appeal his conviction. [ 4 ]

Why it matters

The case drew national attention in the United States because of Flynn’s brief appearance on a television singing competition. The sentence means he is not eligible for parole. The documents give no basis for consequences beyond the county court case and the couple’s family.
