President Donald Trump had said Monday that he was considering firing Guilfoyle. Asked by reporters about her position, he said the administration was looking at it and was not happy. Businessman and Trump donor Eric Deters alleged that Guilfoyle asked him to pay a $100,000 American Express bill ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing in exchange for access to administration officials. Deters said he did not pay the money. CBS reported that he supplied screenshots of text messages, while Guilfoyle's lawyer disputed their authenticity to The Wall Street Journal. [ 13 , 17 ]

Guilfoyle's lawyers said the money was owed for public appearances and speaking engagements that predated her ambassadorial nomination. NBC reported that Deters denied owing that payment. The lawyers also rejected allegations concerning her travel on private planes, saying she sought and followed State Department guidance before each trip and complied with the department's travel regulations. CNN and NBC reported that the State Department's Office of Inspector General was investigating Guilfoyle, citing people familiar with the matter. CNN said the office declined to confirm or deny investigative matters as a matter of policy. Guilfoyle was confirmed as ambassador in September 2025, after a July confirmation hearing, according to CBS. [ 5 , 13 , 17 ]
