South Korean special prosecutors widened searches of election authorities on October 15, pursuing allegations about false hourly voter records and preferential contracts for storing election materials. Reports described one operation at seven election offices and a separate operation at 10 locations over storage contracts. The searches followed raids a day earlier into alleged collusion in the supply of polling-station equipment. [ 24 , 38 , 40 ]
The team led by special prosecutor Lee Tae-han (이태한) said it had found false hourly voter entries at 30 city, county and district election commissions during the June 3 local elections. Dong-A Ilbo reported that investigators analysed election-system logs and questioned about 70 officials. The team said it had identified 25 additional local commissions beyond five already found by a joint investigation team. Reports said the seven-office searches began at about 09:10 and involved 31 personnel. [ 24 , 26 ]
The separate storage-contract operation targeted regional election commissions, other election offices, a training institute and an official's home, according to Asia Economy. It reported 34 personnel, including 10 digital forensic investigators, involved in those searches. CBS NoCut News reported the team's allegation that election commissions in Busan, South Gyeongsang and North Gyeongsang had repeatedly awarded preferential, exclusive storage contracts to a particular company since 2022. The reported suspicions included breach of trust and interference with bidding. [ 38 , 40 ]
On October 14, the team searched the National Election Commission and suppliers in Gimpo and Daegu, five locations in total. Investigators said they suspected collusion in polling-station supply projects worth about 5 billion won for the 21st presidential election and ninth nationwide local elections. Seoul Economic Daily reported that the team intended to examine seized material to determine whether contract awards and supplier selection involved preferential treatment and whether commission officials were involved. Why it matters
The investigation covers both turnout reporting and how election authorities awarded contracts. Prosecutors say they will examine seized material to establish responsibility; the reported allegations do not establish that election results were changed.
