Yana's departure followed controversy over remarks that he had cut road budgets for municipalities whose leaders did not support him in an election, Asahi reported. Reports also alleged that his campaign transported supporters on free shuttle buses in possible violation of election law. Yana submitted his resignation on October 14, saying he could not cause further trouble for parliamentary deliberations and agricultural administration. Takebe said remarks about cutting budgets were unacceptable and pledged to work for public trust. [ 16 ]

Takaichi directed Takebe to promote agriculture, forestry and fisheries and strengthen food security, according to Asahi. Mainichi also reported instructions to advance food technology and structural agricultural reform. Asked about rice policy, Takebe said he first wanted to expand consumption. On opening imports of fresh US potatoes, he expressed strong concern, citing pest problems in his home constituency, and said he would take a firm approach in talks with the United States.
