Kang Heon, a pop music critic who chaired the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service (한국문화예술교육진흥원), died on 20 October at the age of 64. Yonhap and other outlets, citing the cultural community, reported that he died that afternoon. They said the specific cause of death is not known. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 8 , 12 , 13 ]

Kang was born in 1962 in Busan. Yonhap said he entered the Korean language and literature department at Seoul National University because he wanted to become a novelist, but studied music theory at the university's graduate school of music. After graduating he entered the film world, and the outlets say he worked in the independent film collective Jangsangotmae (장산곶매). Hankook Ilbo says he formed the collective. He also wrote screenplays for the commercial films 'Adami nuneul tteul ttae' (아담이 눈을 뜰 때) and 'Jeonggeul seutori' (정글스토리) and scripts for a TV drama. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 12 , 13 ]

Kang began his career as a pop music critic after writing a review of the singer Kim Hyun-sik (김현식) at a junior colleague's request. Hankook Ilbo dates this to 1991. Im Jin-mo (임진모), a critic who had known him for many years, said Kang caused a sensation in music criticism from the early 1990s with his writing. Im said the two worked as a pair, and that there was a saying at the time, 'Gayo is Kang Heon, pop is Im Jin-mo'. Newsis and Chosun Ilbo wrote that his criticism of Seo Taiji and Shin Hae-chul is still highly regarded. [ 1 , 2 , 5 , 6 , 12 , 13 ]

Kang taught pop music history for 20 years at universities including Hongik, Sungkonghoe, Dankook and Sungkyunkwan. With colleagues he made the culture quarterlies 'Yegam' (예감), 'Sangsang' (상상) and 'Review' (리뷰). He also produced concerts and music plays. Newsis and Chosun Ilbo reported that he wrote a pop column for Chosun Ilbo until recently. His books included 전복과 반전의 순간 and 강헌의 한국대중문화사. [ 1 , 2 , 5 , 6 , 12 , 13 ]

At 42 he suffered a torn aorta and spent 23 days in a coma. Yonhap said he studied myeongri (명리학) after waking and published a book in 2015. He served as chief executive of the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation and as fifth president of the Korea Federation of Regional Culture Foundations. In December last year he was appointed chair of the agency. Korea Economic Daily reported that the wake is planned for 9 a.m. on 21 October at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital funeral hall, room 2. [ 1 , 2 , 7 , 8 , 12 , 13 ]
