The Grelka cafe burned down in the resort settlement of Sheregesh in the Kemerovo region on 22 October, and no one was hurt, according to Interfax, TASS and RIA Novosti. The press service of the regional emergencies ministry office said the cafe-bar building on Snezhnaya street caught fire and the flames also spread to the roof of a neighbouring hotel. It put the total area of the fire at 490 square metres. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
According to the same statement, 25 people and eight units of emergencies ministry equipment worked at the scene. [ 1 ]
Kuzbass Governor Ilya Seredyuk said the cafe that burned was Grelka. RIA Novosti quoted him as saying he was told of the fire immediately and that the main thing was that nobody was hurt. He said specialists would determine the causes of the fire. [ 1 , 3 ]
Seredyuk wrote that it was nonetheless a worrying signal. "In the run-up to the season we see shortcomings and insufficient control," he wrote, according to Interfax and RIA Novosti. RIA Novosti quoted him as saying the task was to look after the safety of resort guests and staff, which must be guaranteed above all in public places such as hotels, mini-hotels and cafes. [ 1 , 3 ]
Interfax reported the governor's statement that the cafe had previously been found in breach of sanitary and epidemiological requirements and that its work had been suspended. In May a court found the cafe's manager guilty of violating sanitary and epidemiological rules and sentenced the manager to three years of restricted freedom, Interfax said, citing the governor. The governor proposed that owners of such venues voluntarily carry out unscheduled fire-safety inspections and a check of their fire-extinguishing equipment. He said the list of venues that pass the checks would be published on the website of the Sheregesh resort directorate. RIA Novosti added that he also reminded owners of administrative and criminal liability for breaches of safety norms and rules. [ 1 , 3 ]
Why it matters
The governor said the fire showed shortcomings and insufficient oversight ahead of the resort season, and proposed checks of fire safety and fire-extinguishing equipment. A list of venues that pass the checks is to be published on the resort directorate's website.
