Korea’s Intellectual Property Office (지식재산처) held three award contests on Oct. 6 and named winners in Korean-language trademarks, Hangul typeface design and design using cultural heritage, Yonhap reported. Binggrae’s “Ttaom” (따옴) took the beautiful-trademark prize, Wando County’s “Wando Huimang-che” (완도희망체) the beautiful Hangul font design prize, and a tumbler by Jeong Lab (정랩) and Lee Jae-wook (이재욱) the beautiful cultural-heritage design prize. The contests were the 11th Beautiful Korean-Language Trademark Selection Contest, the 2nd Beautiful Hangul Font Design Selection Contest and the 1st Beautiful Cultural Heritage Design Selection Contest. [ 2 ]
Yonhap reported that Ttaom is a pure Korean word meaning roughly “just fetched.” In the other trademark categories, Arittaum (아리따움) was named the pretty trademark, while Tada, Haedeunmaru, Notbom, Bokjakbokjak and the small-business mutual-aid “Yellow Umbrella” (노란우산) were named friendly trademarks. Tmoney’s “Dunggeunbaram-che” (둥근바람체) was named the pretty design. [ 2 ]
The Wando typeface was described as a handwritten-style font whose concept comes from the “莞” in Wando’s name, glossed in the report as a character for smiling, and which is meant to express the warmth of Wando residents in a full structure. The winning tumbler was noted for shaping its lid like a traditional gat (갓). [ 2 ]
Kim Yong-sun, head of the Intellectual Property Office, said Hangul is “Korea’s representative invention” and a cultural heritage carrying the country’s history and identity, adding that it is recognized worldwide for its formal beauty and excellence beyond the instrumental value of communication, Yonhap reported. [ 2 ]
Seoul Shinmun also reported the selections, saying Ttaom and Wando Huimang-che were chosen in the Korean-language trademark and typeface categories. Only that report’s headline and publication time were available. [ 1 ]
Por qué importa
The awards are the Intellectual Property Office’s annual recognition of pure-Korean brand names and Hangul typeface design, giving selected companies and one county government a public mention. A local government typeface, Wando Huimang-che, was placed in the same competition as corporate designs, and the newest prize category covers products that reuse traditional forms. The documents indicate no effects beyond the awards themselves.
