US President Donald Trump said the United States is continuing to work on settling the Russia-Ukraine conflict and that a conclusion is approaching. “We have not yet finished the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. I am working on it. Believe it or not, it may not look like it, but it really is approaching,” Trump said at an event in the state of Maryland, according to Kommersant. Vedomosti, citing a White House broadcast of the remarks, quoted him saying it would happen “quite soon”. RIA Novosti, TASS, RBC and Interfax reported the same claim. Kommersant described the statement as a continuation of a two-level scheme in which the United States supports direct Russian-Ukrainian talks while conducting its own almost daily dialogue with Moscow. It recalled that in June 2025 the State Department framed this line as rejecting a military solution and being ready to support any mechanism leading to a just, durable and lasting peace. The same outlet noted an organisational limit: on 19 March 2026 the trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine group was suspended and a meeting of the delegations was postponed because of a military operation against Iran, while, according to Trump, bilateral contact between Washington and Moscow continued almost daily. On 5 October, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on that statement, saying Russian forces carry out retaliatory strikes after Kyiv expanded its list of targets inside Russia, the outlet reported.
