Коротко

The New York Times reported that US military and intelligence services warned Saudi Arabia over several months about a renewed threat from Yemen's Houthis and urged Riyadh to unite Yemen's internationally recognised government forces. According to the newspaper's account, Washington offered planning and intelligence help, including on Houthi troop movements, but said it would not include airstrikes. The reporting follows an October 4 counteroffensive by Yemen's internationally recognised government against the Houthis, who took parts of Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the autumn.

United States military and intelligence services warned Saudi Arabia over several months about a renewed threat from the Houthis, the New York Times reported, according to accounts carried by RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax. The newspaper cited two American sources. TASS said the US military and intelligence services had informed Riyadh on the subject “for several months”. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Interfax's account of the report, the Americans urged Saudi officials to unite the fragmented forces of Yemen's internationally recognised government. US officials offered help with planning and intelligence, including information on Houthi troop movements, but stressed that the assistance would be limited and would not include airstrikes, Interfax reported. [ 3 ]

The reporting follows fighting inside Yemen. On October 4, the internationally recognised Yemeni government began a counteroffensive against the Houthis, who had taken Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb strait in the autumn, according to Interfax. Yemeni government representatives subsequently said their troops took control of a number of key areas near the strait, including the town of Dubab and its airport and a substantial part of the coastal strip in Taiz province. The Houthis said in response that they had repelled the attacks by pro-government forces and retaken some of the territory they had lost, Interfax reported. [ 3 ]

Saudi Arabia is providing military support to Yemeni government forces, striking Houthi positions from the air in an attempt to recover lost territory, according to Interfax. The outlet noted Yemen's strategic importance to the kingdom because millions of barrels of Saudi oil are transported through the Bab el-Mandeb strait. More than 100 fighter jets from the Saudi-led Arab coalition are taking part in the operation named “Dawn of Yemen”, Interfax reported. [ 3 ]

RIA Novosti and TASS each published a short item on the New York Times report without additional detail, while Interfax's version provided the context on the Yemeni operation and Saudi involvement. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Почему это важно

The reports, carried by Russian state and business outlets citing a single US newspaper, point to sustained US-Saudi coordination over Yemen at a time when the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a route for Saudi oil exports, is contested. All three documents rest on the same New York Times report and unnamed American sources, so the scope of any US role remains unverified beyond that account.
