A court in Kazakhstan has arrested Russian rapper Navai (Navai Bakirov, Наваи Бакиров) for two months in a drug smuggling case, Kommersant, RBC and Meduza reported on 15 October. Meduza, citing Baza, and Kommersant said the measure was chosen by the Korday district court of Zhambyl Region. Kommersant reported that he was charged with smuggling items withdrawn from circulation. [ 11 , 12 , 15 , 22 ]

According to the Zhambyl Region police department, cited by Interfax, Vedomosti and Kommersant, he was detained on 13 October at the Korday border checkpoint as he entered Kazakhstan; Meduza said the checkpoint is on the border with Kyrgyzstan. Vedomosti reported that police and the border service of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee (KNB) took part, and that a narcotic substance was found and seized during a check of the car he was travelling in. A criminal case was opened on suspicion of attempted drug smuggling, he was placed in a temporary detention facility and a pre-trial investigation is under way. Police said other details could not be disclosed under Article 201 of Kazakhstan's Criminal Procedure Code. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]

Reports of the amount differ. Meduza, citing Baza, which cited checkpoint staff, reported that 10 grams of marijuana were found in the car, in which his manager and driver were also travelling. Kommersant, citing a Telegram channel, reported 2.5 grams and said two other people in the car were also detained. TASS reported that Kazakh journalist Mikhail Kozachkov (Михаил Козачков) said 2.5 grams were found. [ 7 , 8 , 9 ]

RBC reported that his lawyer suggested he could avoid prison and might face a fine. RIA Novosti reported that the defence is preparing an appeal, and TASS said the lawyer is challenging the arrest so that he can be released on bail. On 16 October his lawyer Rena Kerimova (Рена Керимова) told TASS that he is in the pretrial detention centre in Taraz. Kommersant wrote that drug smuggling in Kazakhstan is punishable by a fine or prison up to life, depending on the circumstances and amount, while RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed speaker as saying terms range from three to five years for a non-large amount up to ten to fifteen years for a group or an especially large amount. [ 2 , 8 , 16 , 17 , 20 , 25 , 26 ]

Russia's Consulate General in Almaty sent a note to Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry over the arrest, RBC reported, citing TASS. RIA Novosti reported on 16 October that the ministry had received the note. [ 18 , 19 , 21 , 23 , 27 ]

Interfax said he had come to Kazakhstan to give concerts and was due to perform at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace in Astana on Wednesday evening; organisers said it was cancelled for "technical reasons", while Meduza reported they postponed the 14 October concert to an undetermined date. Meduza said he is best known as a member of the duo HammAli & Navai, which existed from 2016 to 2025, before starting a solo career. Vedomosti recalled that in May he was released after questioning following a Ferrari crash on Zubovsky Boulevard in Moscow. [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]
