Anne Carson's 'Ppalgang-ui Jaseojeon' rises to No. 2 on Kyobo's weekly bestseller list

Anne Carson's 'Ppalgang-ui Jaseojeon' (빨강의 자서전) rose to No. 2 on the overall bestseller list for the third week of October, Kyobo Book Centre announced on 23 October. Yonhap, CBS NoCut News and Kyunghyang Shinmun said the book had been 10th the week before and climbed eight places. Newsis described Carson as the Canadian writer who won this year's Nobel Prize in Literature. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun said a sudden rush of demand had left the book in short supply, and that it rose with a restock. Newsis reported that Carson's works caused a craze in Korean bookstores after the prize announcement and created shortages. It also quoted Kyobo as saying its list is based on books whose delivery to readers has been completed; Newsis presented this as the reason the ranking did not climb further even though the sales rate had risen. Other Carson titles also ranked. 'Nampyeon-ui Areumdaum' (남편의 아름다움) placed 8th in foreign fiction and, according to Newsis and CBS NoCut News, 31st overall. 'Eroseu, Dalkomsseupsseulhan' (에로스, 달콤씁쓸한) placed 2nd in the essay category per Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun. Newsis put it 28th overall, and CBS NoCut News said it jumped 45 places to 28th overall. Newsis added that a poetry title by Carson, 'Jjalbeun Iyagideul' (짧은 이야기들), was No. 1 in poetry. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Kim Nan-do (김난도), an emeritus professor at Seoul National University, saw 'Trend Korea 2027' stay at No. 1 for a third week. Park Jong-hoon's (박종훈) 'Gajja Don Jinjja Bu' (가짜 돈 진짜 부) entered at No. 4 on release. Newsis and CBS NoCut News said 74.8% of its buyers were men. By age, buyers in their 40s were the largest group at 29.6%, followed by those in their 30s at 28.1% and 50s at 27.6%. CBS NoCut News said buyers aged 30 to 50 made up 85.3% of the total. CBS NoCut News also reported that 'Money Trend 2027' by Jeong Tae-ik (정태익) ranked 11th, and that a book by Andre Kostolany rose 11 places to 18th. Newsis and CBS NoCut News said Min Jin Lee (이민진), described as the author of 'Pachinko', entered at 15th with her new novel 'American Hakwon' (아메리칸 학원). [ 1 , 3 ]
Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that not all of Carson's books can be bought in volume. For 'Nokseu' (녹스), published by Bomnarui Chaek (봄날의책), an online bookstore showed a delivery notice that shipping could be delayed depending on the publisher's production, with an expected delivery date of 3 December. The paper said the 192-page book is made by hand by letterpress workshop craftsmen and folds out into one continuous sheet. It said the first Korean edition in 2022 took about two months to make.
