Hang Seng Indexes Company announced on 7 October the results of its consultation on the Hang Seng Tech Index and set out six revisions to how the index is compiled (1, 3, 4). Business outlets CLS and Yicai led with the headline change: the number of constituents will rise from 30 to 50 (1, 2, 3, 4). [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Under the plan detailed by 36Kr, the requirement that eligible candidate companies belong to five designated industries under the Hang Seng industry classification system is removed. Existing themes are consolidated and expanded, with a new frontier technology theme added. The six revised technology themes are digital platforms and solutions, artificial intelligence, advanced hardware, robotics and automation, cloud, and frontier technology, and technology sub-themes increase from 16 to 24 (3, 4). [ 3 , 4 ]

The selection universe changes from main board-listed companies to constituents of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap & MidCap Index, and a dual-group selection mechanism is introduced using market capitalisation ranking and revenue growth ranking (3, 4). Of the 50 constituents, the first 40 are chosen by market capitalisation and the remaining 10 by revenue growth over the past twelve months, according to 36Kr. The same report says non-constituents must additionally meet a minimum average daily turnover of HK$100 million over the past three months, while constituents selected on revenue growth must have recorded at least HK$500 million in annual revenue in each of the last two consecutive fiscal years (3). [ 3 , 4 ]

On timing, Jiemian reported that the revisions will be implemented in the index review for the period ended 30 September 2026 and take effect in the December 2026 index adjustment. CLS and 36Kr reported that the changes would be implemented in December (1, 3, 4). [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

Why it matters

The Hang Seng Tech Index is a widely followed gauge of Hong Kong-listed technology companies, so changing how its constituents are selected affects which firms are represented in it. The revisions broaden the stated theme coverage to areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and frontier technology, and add a revenue-growth route into the index alongside market capitalisation. The documents give no figures on fund flows or investor impact.
