Typhoon Nuoluo (诺洛), the 28th typhoon of the year, was a severe tropical storm over the northwest Pacific at 8 a.m. on October 8, centred at 26.7°N, 155.9°E, about 1,830 km east-southeast of Tokyo, according to reports carried by CLS, Yicai and Jiemian. Yicai attributed the report to CCTV News. Maximum winds near the centre were force 10, or 28 metres per second, and the minimum central pressure was 982 hectopascals. Force-7 winds extended 240 to 280 km from the centre and force-10 winds 60 to 80 km. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Nuoluo is forecast to move west-northwest at 25 to 30 km per hour, holding its strength or strengthening slightly. After the 10th it is expected to turn gradually toward the north-northeast and become an extratropical cyclone. The forecast says it will have no future impact on China's sea areas. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The headlines of all three reports said Typhoon Xiaoxiong (小熊), the year's 29th, would gradually strengthen. Jiemian reported that at 8 a.m. on October 8 Xiaoxiong was also a severe tropical storm, centred at 16.8°N, 161.3°E, about 3,000 km southeast of Tokyo. Its maximum winds were force 10 (28 m/s) and its central pressure 982 hPa, with force-7 winds extending 150 to 220 km from the centre and force-10 winds 30 to 50 km. The reports did not give a forecast track for Xiaoxiong. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Why it matters
The forecast says Nuoluo will have no impact on China's sea areas. Business outlets carried the update as a routine weather bulletin, and the reports give no forecast track for Xiaoxiong, which they say will gradually strengthen.
