In the interview quoted by The Hill, Johnson said he would be willing to return to his hometown of Shreveport and start a lawn business if he felt that was what God wanted him to do. He described his aim as serving God and his country to the best of his ability. The Washington Post said the remarks prompted speculation that he could retire from politics if Democrats retake the chamber. [ 2 , 3 ]
Johnson's spokesperson, Lance Trover, criticised that speculation in a post on X, according to The Hill. Trover said attention to the lawn-care remarks was overshadowing fundraising figures announced that morning and Johnson's travel schedule in support of keeping the majority. He characterised the speculation as an attempt to create a contrived narrative about the speaker. [ 3 ]
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Johnson would ultimately have to decide what comes next, The Hill reported. Jeffries also predicted that voters would remove Johnson and the Republican majority in the House, and possibly in the Senate. The Hill described Johnson's speakership as marked by internal Republican disputes, a narrow majority and repeated difficulties uniting his conference behind President Trump's agenda. [ 3 ]
Why it matters
The comments prompted speculation about whether Johnson might leave politics if Democrats regain the House, The Washington Post reported. His spokesperson pushed back against that speculation and pointed to Johnson's fundraising and travel to preserve the Republican majority.
