Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is scheduled to travel to Michigan next week to campaign with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, according to October 9 reports. The Hill said a schedule supplied by El-Sayed's campaign placed her on his “It Shouldn't Be This Hard” bus tour next Thursday. The planned stops are Escanaba, Iron Mountain and Marquette. The following Friday, Ocasio-Cortez is scheduled to hold separate political events at universities in Rochester and Ypsilanti and attend a “Latinos for Abdul Rally” in Detroit, The Hill reported. She said El-Sayed had assembled a coalition focused on reducing costs for Michigan families. She also said she hoped to work with him in Washington on healthcare as a human right and reducing the influence of corporate money in politics. [ 2 ]
El-Sayed described Ocasio-Cortez as an important partner in his successful primary campaign and said they would campaign together during the remaining 25 days of the race, according to The Hill. He identified putting money in residents' pockets, removing money from politics and passing Medicare for All as his goals. The New York Times reported that she endorsed him before the primary, and both outlets said she recently appeared at a fundraiser for his Senate campaign in New York. [ 1 , 2 ]
El-Sayed is running against Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in the November election, The Hill reported. The outlet said other prominent Democrats had visited Michigan to campaign for him, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, who appeared at a Detroit roundtable on Black maternal healthcare last month.
