Five people died when part of a seven-storey residential building collapsed in Istanbul's Maltepe district, and search and rescue work at the site has ended, TASS, RBC and RIA Novosti reported on October 9. TASS cited TRT Haber for the death toll. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

RIA Novosti, citing a press release from the provincial authorities, said the rescue operation ended at 06:15 Moscow time after the body of the last of the five victims was recovered from the rubble. A five-year-old child was among the dead. Nine residents of the building were rescued, the authorities said, and 55 residents of three nearby buildings were evacuated, 44 of whom were temporarily placed in hotels. Almost 800 people took part in the search and rescue operation. [ 3 ]

According to RIA Novosti, three floors of the seven-storey building, which was built in 1987, collapsed overnight into Thursday. District prefect Esin Keymen (Эсин Кеймен) said earlier that two floors of the partly collapsed building were an illegal add-on. None of the documents states the cause of the collapse. [ 3 ]

RIA Novosti also reported, citing the consulate general, that no Russians were among the dead or injured. [ 3 ]
