South Korea's KOSPI reversed an early rebound and closed October 14 at 6,008.81, down 26.54 points, or 0.44%, according to Newsis, Asia Economy and Chosun Ilbo. It was the index's sixth consecutive declining session. The KOSDAQ also fell, ending at 823.88, a decline of 1.57%. Newsis reported that the KOSPI had risen above 6,190 early in the session before foreign selling intensified in the afternoon. It later dropped to around 5,940 before recovering enough to finish above 6,000. [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]
The outlets agreed that foreign investors and individuals were net sellers in the KOSPI market and institutions were net buyers, but their reported totals differed. Asia Economy put foreign net selling at 1.1814 trillion won, individual net selling at 314.3 billion won and institutional net buying at 808.5 billion won. Chosun Ilbo reported foreign net selling exceeding 1.3 trillion won, individual selling of about 300 billion won and institutional buying of about 900 billion won. [ 6 , 7 ]
Analysts quoted by Newsis and Chosun Ilbo cited higher international oil prices, weak artificial intelligence momentum and caution ahead of U.S. consumer price data as constraints on the rebound. They said ASML's third-quarter results and next-quarter guidance exceeded market expectations, but profit-taking weighed on semiconductor sentiment. Newsis reported that Samsung Electronics finished unchanged while SK hynix declined 1.66%. The latest decline followed a 5.46% KOSPI drop to 6,035.35 on October 13, when foreign investors were net sellers of 4.5259 trillion won, according to Kyunghyang Shinmun. On October 12, the index had fallen 3.65% to 6,384.24, Yonhap reported. [ 2 , 4 , 5 , 7 ]
Why it matters
The decline followed a 5.46% KOSPI fall on October 13. Analysts cited caution ahead of U.S. inflation data and profit-taking in semiconductor stocks despite ASML results exceeding expectations.
