Broadcaster Cho Hye-ryun (조혜련) said she bought SK hynix shares at 870,000 won and then kept buying as the price climbed, leaving her returns lower than they might have been. Korean outlets reported her remarks from a YouTube video released on 20 October on the channel Meoni In Deo Teuraep (머니인더트랩), in which she and Seo Dong-ju shared their experiences of investing in shares. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]

Newsis quoted her as saying she first went in at 870,000 won and kept buying in between. She said that when the price was at 250, 260 and 270 people were saying it would reach 400, and her heart pounded. She said she bought at the raised level, the price then came back down, and the averaging down became a frustrating one rather than a good one. [ 3 , 5 ]

Cho said she is not yet at a loss, but not much in profit either, because she bought a lot at higher prices. She added that she could not buy much for lack of money and that this was fortunate. Chosun Ilbo's OSEN article also quoted her saying that if she had not sold she would have tripled her profit. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

In Newsis's second article, Cho said she does not want to buy now because the mood is one of holding on. She said borrowing money to buy shares is dangerous and that investing with spare money is right. She said she hopes people who bought good shares will hold them until 2030 and that she plans to do the same. Seoul Shinmun quoted her as saying that as long as Korea keeps developing the future is bright, and that it helps to think the shares are still undervalued. [ 4 , 5 ]

Chosun Ilbo's OSEN article reported that Seo Dong-ju also mentioned buying SK hynix at a peak and taking a loss, having earlier said returns fell to minus 50%. It also quoted Cho as saying she had heard SK hynix traded at 300 won in 2005, when she was on the show "Yeogeol Six" (여걸식스). [ 1 ]

Seoul Shinmun placed her account against market data. It said SK hynix had fallen about 56% from its peak and closed up 5.81% at 1,294,000 won on 21 October. It cited the Korea Exchange as showing individual investors net bought 31.502 trillion won of shares from April to June. NH Investment & Securities data showed 74.18% of its mobile-trading investors in SK hynix held a loss as of 19 October. [ 4 ]

Why it matters

The coverage is a personal account of chasing a rising share price, which Newsis presented as a warning about chase buying and loan-funded investing. Seoul Shinmun placed it alongside data on retail investors' losses in SK hynix, but the documents do not show any wider market effect from her remarks.
