Hungary's Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office detained György Matolcsy, the former head of the National Bank and former economy minister, Prime Minister Péter Magyar said on Wednesday, 21 October. Magyar wrote on social media that the prosecutor's office had detained the former central bank head and former minister in Viktor Orbán's government. Interfax noted that the prime minister's message did not say what the detention was linked to. [ 1 , 3 ]

RIA Novosti, citing the Telex outlet, reported that Matolcsy is suspected of fraud causing major financial damage and of using forged documents. Kommersant reported that his defence said he is suspected of economic fraud causing significant financial damage and of using a forged document. His lawyer added that he had not yet been questioned. [ 3 , 4 ]

Kommersant, citing a local outlet, said Matolcsy was detained in the morning and taken to the Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office. The outlet also reported that several people were detained, among them the lawyer of Matolcsy's son Ádám and a senior employee of a company that owns a villa on Mykonos, which the media link to Ádám Matolcsy. The prosecutor's office said investigative actions were under way in several places in a case of misappropriation of money causing significant financial damage, and gave no information on any detentions. [ 4 ]

Interfax cited the Associated Press as saying that prosecutors had earlier announced coordinated actions in an investigation into the central bank's activities and possible misappropriation of funds. RBC's summary said the detention came amid an inquiry into asset losses of a fund at the Hungarian central bank amounting to hundreds of billions of forints, and that Matolcsy was also questioned in September in a case about pressure on a bank with an Austrian parent. TASS's headline put the suspected financial crimes at €1.3 million and its summary said he was taken into custody. [ 1 , 2 , 5 ]

In September the National Bank of Hungary filed a complaint with law enforcement over suspected fraud and abuse of office, citing the depreciation of five properties it owns under its former leadership. Matolcsy was national economy minister from 2010 to 2013 and head of the central bank until 2025; RIA Novosti and Kommersant also give 2000 to 2002 as a period when he was minister. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]
