Russia says it struck cargo ship near Odesa carrying military goods for Ukraine
In short
Russia's defence ministry said its forces struck a cargo ship east of Odesa overnight with drones, saying the vessel was delivering military goods for Ukraine's armed forces. The ministry said strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and on ships used in the interests of Ukraine's army are continuing. The documents carry no Ukrainian or independent confirmation of the strike or the cargo, and give no casualty or damage details.

Russia's defence ministry said its forces struck a cargo ship carrying military cargo for Ukraine's armed forces, in an overnight attack near Odesa. Interfax quoted the ministry as saying: “Today at night, as a result of a strike by unmanned aerial vehicles on a sea passage east of the city of Odesa, a sea vessel of the cargo ship type delivering military property for Ukraine's armed forces was struck.” TASS and RIA Novosti reported the same claim in headline form, referring to military cargo and military property for Ukraine's armed forces. [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]
The ministry described the strike as part of a continuing campaign. Interfax quoted it saying that “the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue to strike at objects of Ukraine's port infrastructure and sea vessels used in the interests of Ukraine's armed forces”, and Vedomosti carried the same statement. [ 1 , 4 ]
Vedomosti, publishing on 3 October, reported a sequence of similar ministry claims. It said the ministry reported on 3 October a strike on a cargo ship in the north-western Black Sea that it said was delivering dual-use cargo to the port of Odesa; on 2 October a strike on a cargo ship heading to Odesa with military goods and dual-use cargo; and on 1 October a strike on a cargo ship in the port of Chornomorsk that it said was carrying military goods and dual-use cargo. On the same day, Vedomosti reported, the ministry said Russian forces also struck targets in Kyiv and the Odesa region. [ 1 ]
The documents describe the location differently. Vedomosti refers to a cargo ship in the port of Odesa, while Interfax says the vessel was struck on a sea passage east of Odesa. The documents do not make clear whether these describe the same strike or different ones. [ 1 , 4 ]
Only the Russian defence ministry's account appears in the documents. They contain no statement from Ukraine's authorities or military, no independent confirmation of the cargo, and no information on casualties, damage or the identity of the vessel. The ministry described the targeted ships as carrying military goods and dual-use cargo; the documents give no evidence for that beyond the ministry's statements. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Why it matters
The claim, carried by Russian state outlets and by business media, points to a continuing campaign against shipping and port infrastructure around Odesa that the defence ministry itself says is ongoing. Because the only account in the documents comes from Russia's defence ministry, the effect on Black Sea shipping cannot be assessed from them, and no Ukrainian or independent version is present.
