Version 2: No new facts about the ruling emerged; Kyunghyang Shinmun, Seoul Shinmun, Newsis and Chosun Ilbo also carried the sentencing, with the sentence, charges and court reasoning unchanged.

In short

Changwon District Court sentenced a man in his 50s to one year and six months in prison for carrying a knife through a traditional market in Gimhae and later returning to threaten a fish-shop owner who had reported him to police, Yonhap, Dong-A Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. The court said the victim would have felt considerable anxiety and fear and noted the offence was committed during a repeat-offence period, while also citing the man's admission and remorse. Yonhap reported he had been released in December 2025 after a 2024 special-injury sentence.

Changwon District Court's Criminal Division 4 sentenced a man in his 50s to one year and six months in prison on Oct. 5 on charges of carrying a weapon in a public place and violating the Act on Special Cases concerning the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (retaliatory intimidation), Yonhap, Dong-A Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. The court is presided over by Judge Oh Dae-seok, according to Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun. Dong-A Ilbo reported the defendant is 59 years old; the other accounts identified him only as A. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Dong-A Ilbo, on the morning of July 16 the man took a knife kept at a fish shop run by a person identified as B in a traditional market in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, and walked around holding it, causing unease among a number of people. Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported he was drunk, swore as he walked through the market and was arrested by police. Yonhap reported that B submitted a statement about the incident and handed over the knife the man had taken. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

On July 19 the man returned to the fish shop and threatened B with a knife, according to the reports. Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported he believed B's statement had led police to investigate him. Dong-A Ilbo quoted him as saying, in Korean, “You reported me to the police, didn't you?” while holding a knife from the shop. The two charges cover both the weapon-carrying and the retaliation. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

In explaining the sentence, the court said B would have felt considerable anxiety and fear and noted that the man committed the offence during the period for repeat offences, Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. It said it also took into account that he admitted the crime, showed remorse, and did not appear to have prepared the knife in a planned way. [ 1 , 3 ]

Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported the man had previously been sentenced in August 2024 to one year and six months in prison for special injury and other charges and was released in December 2025. Dong-A Ilbo's posted summary referred to a 2024 special-injury conviction but was cut off before setting out the details. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The ruling is a second prison term for the defendant after a 2024 special-injury conviction, and the case was prosecuted under the aggravated-punishment law that covers retaliation against witnesses. The coverage indicates courts in the region treat threats against people who report crimes as serious. Beyond the court's stated reasoning, the documents give no further basis for broader significance.
