Japan committee recommends Chokai Mountain and Tobishima as UNESCO Global Geopark
In short
The Japan Geopark Committee decided on Oct. 5 to recommend “Chokai Mountain and Tobishima,” an area spanning Akita and Yamagata prefectures, for UNESCO Global Geopark status, according to Nikkei. UNESCO is expected to decide on certification as early as spring 2028; if approved, it would be Japan’s 12th Global Geopark. The committee cited the area’s volcanic and undersea geology and its educational and research activities.

The Japan Geopark Committee, made up of experts, decided on Oct. 5 to recommend “Chokai Mountain and Tobishima,” an area spanning Akita and Yamagata prefectures, for UNESCO Global Geopark status, Nikkei reported. Nippon TV News and Tokyo Shimbun also reported the recommendation decision in headline-level items. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
According to Nikkei, UNESCO is expected to decide on certification as early as spring 2028. The committee’s recommendation would be followed by a UNESCO on-site survey, a recommendation on whether to certify around autumn 2027, and a final decision in spring 2028 if the process proceeds smoothly, the newspaper said. [ 3 ]
Nikkei reported that Chokai Mountain was formed as layers of lava piled up over long volcanic activity, while Tobishima corresponds to the peak of an undersea mountain range. The area was designated a Japan Geopark, the domestic version of the listing, in 2016. [ 3 ]
The committee gave its reasons for the recommendation, saying the area is “an excellent region where the growth of Chokai Mountain and crustal uplift caused by earthquakes can be understood,” and noting that ecosystem surveys and educational activities drawing on history and culture are carried out there, with overseas visitors expected, according to Nikkei. [ 3 ]
Nikkei reported that the last recommendation decision was “Mine Akiyoshidai” in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 2024, and that if Chokai Mountain and Tobishima are certified they would become Japan’s 12th Global Geopark. [ 3 ]
Why it matters
A UNESCO Global Geopark listing would put the Chokai Mountain and Tobishima area on an international register and, as the committee itself noted, is expected to bring overseas visitors. The documents treat the recommendation as one step in a process that still requires a UNESCO on-site survey and a final decision, so no change on the ground is yet confirmed.

Confirmed by several sources
Still unclear
- Whether UNESCO will grant certification, and on what date. The documents describe the committee recommendation as a step in the process; Nikkei said a final decision is expected as early as spring 2028 “if things proceed smoothly,” so certification is not assured.
- The exact schedule of UNESCO’s on-site survey and its recommendation on certification. Nikkei reports these as expected around autumn 2027 and spring 2028 without fixed dates, and no other document adds timing.
- Which municipality or base the geopark’s activities are centred on. The documents state only that the area spans Akita and Yamagata prefectures and name no city.
