Newsis reported that the first dating-violence complaint was received in mid-May and further reports of dating violence and stalking followed. Police said the woman initially declined an offered smartwatch. They said they recommended it again while monitoring the case and issued it after she accepted, around September 16. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that she was also registered in the 112 emergency reporting system for victim safety measures and that no restraining order had been imposed on the suspect. [ 10 , 15 ]

The smartwatch sends an emergency report and real-time location information to police when its emergency button is pressed. Hankook Ilbo reported that police confirmed the woman had not been able to activate it during the attack. Dong-A Ilbo's later summary said whether it was used had not been confirmed. Reports said a passerby notified police. Seoul Shinmun reported that police were reviewing earlier complaints, their handling and the appropriateness of the victim's protection measures.
