A former OpenAI employee has been charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications after a hidden recording device was found in an executive conference room. The Justice Department identified him as Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national. He was arrested on October 9 and made his initial appearance in federal court on October 13. [ 1 , 9 ]

Prosecutors said employees discovered the device on September 30, inserted into a USB port on the back of a television. They said it was concealed in toilet paper and had been installed about two days before its discovery. The conference room was used for highly confidential and proprietary discussions, including research, product plans and business development, according to the Justice Department. [ 9 ]

OpenAI said the device monitored audio and had advanced encryption and a data-transfer mechanism designed to evade monitoring, CNN reported. The company said it used its AI models to understand the device and identify the employee it said had planted it. OpenAI dismissed the employee and referred the incident to the FBI. [ 3 , 8 ]

Prosecutors also alleged that Alfozan used a productivity tool to seek information about meeting rooms, calendars and leadership locations. Wired reported that a chatbot account associated with his spouse had been used to ask technical questions about setting up a concealed audio recording device. Security staff allegedly found an additional recording device in his bag at the office. [ 8 , 12 ]

OpenAI said it had no indications that Alfozan had improperly accessed or extracted model weights, source code or customer data. The FBI's investigation remains ongoing. Wired reported that neither prosecutors nor OpenAI had provided information about a possible motive. The Boston Globe likewise said the complaint did not detail what the employee might have wanted to do with any captured communications. [ 9 , 12 , 14 ]
