The New Yalu River Bridge between China and North Korea opened on October 15, Japanese outlets reported, ending a delay of about 12 years since its main structure was completed. The road bridge links Dandong in China's Liaoning province with Sinuiju in northwestern North Korea. Sankei and Tokyo Shimbun reported an opening ceremony, while TBS reported the opening from Dandong. [ 2 , 8 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 18 , 24 , 25 ]

The crossing is about three kilometres long and has two road lanes in each direction. Sankei reported that construction was agreed during then-Chinese premier Wen Jiabao's 2009 visit to North Korea. Jiji said work began in 2010 and the bridge was largely completed in 2014. Opening was subsequently postponed as development of associated facilities on the North Korean side failed to progress, the outlets reported. [ 2 , 3 , 9 ]

Reports described accelerated preparation of facilities before the opening. TBS said its reporting on October 6 found buildings believed to be customs facilities on the North Korean side nearly complete. Asahi reported seeing more than 50 apparently new trucks lined up near the bridge during an early-October visit to Dandong. In its October 14 report, Jiji cited Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning as saying the bridge would further promote economic and trade exchanges and movement of people. [ 1 , 3 , 8 ]

The existing Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge has served as a main trade route but is ageing and shared by rail and road traffic, Sankei and Mainichi reported. They expected the new road crossing to increase transport capacity. Outlets linked the opening to improving relations, noting Kim Jong Un's visit to China in September 2025 and Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea in June 2026. [ 2 , 9 ]

Why it matters

The new road bridge adds capacity alongside an ageing crossing shared by rail and road traffic, according to the reports. China's foreign ministry said it expected the bridge to promote economic exchanges and movement of people.
