A new road bridge linking China and North Korea appears to be moving toward opening after more than a decade of delay, according to local reports. The bridge, called the China-North Korea Yalu River Bridge (New Yalu River Bridge), links Dandong in China's Liaoning province with Sinuiju in North Korea. It was completed in 2014 and has not opened for more than ten years; Asahi Shimbun attributed the delay to stalled China-North Korea relations, while TBS NEWS DIG said the backdrop was believed to be worsened ties between the two countries. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
On October 6, during China's National Day holidays, Asahi Shimbun reported that more than 50 trucks that appeared to be new were lined up at the bridge foot in Dandong, and that an office building near the bridge was having its exterior washed at a fast pace. In late September, trucks were seen crossing the new bridge from China into North Korea, and a source told the newspaper it was a test run carrying cargo. [ 2 ]
Asahi Shimbun also reported that multiple China-North Korea sources said an opening ceremony could be held as early as mid-October. No document cites official confirmation of a date. Yahoo! News Japan carried FNN footage reporting that preparations for the opening had been captured on camera, and TBS NEWS DIG reported further signs of movement, including an inspection on the Chinese side, new trucks, and large gates on the North Korean side. The bridge is about 3 kilometers long and carries two lanes in each direction. Asahi Shimbun reported that it is expected to make logistics smoother and lead to an expansion of China-North Korea trade. [ 2 ]
Почему это важно
The bridge has sat unused for more than a decade as China-North Korea relations stalled, so any opening would be a visible sign of revived cross-border traffic. Asahi Shimbun reported expectations that smoother logistics would expand China-North Korea trade, a flow with regional implications. The documents give no official confirmation, so the timing remains unverified.
