Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi asked US President Donald Trump, at their meeting in September, to urge North Korea's Kim Jong Un to accept a Japan-North Korea summit if a US-North Korea summit is held, according to NHK News, Jiji Press and Yahoo! News Japan. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Takaichi met families of Japanese abductees at the prime minister's office on October 6 and described the content of the Japan-US summit, Jiji Press reported. According to Kato Katsunobu, a former minister in charge of the abduction issue who briefed reporters afterward, Takaichi told Trump: “If there is a US-North Korea summit, please tell him at that time to meet Takaichi.” Trump's reaction has not been made clear, Jiji Press said. [ 1 , 2 ]

Jiji Press reported that the request appears aimed at breaking the deadlock, as negotiations between Japan and North Korea over the abduction issue have remained stalled. In her policy speech on October 5, Takaichi said she would work toward an early resolution “without excluding any options, including a summit,” the outlet reported. [ 2 ]

NHK News also reported that the abductees' families reported their US trip to Takaichi and called for strong diplomacy. It reported separately that abductee Megumi Yokota has turned 62, with her mother Sakie expressing frustration. Yahoo! News Japan carried a headline quoting Takaichi as saying she wants to open a breakthrough in her own generation, and noting that the families' association reported on its September trip to the United States. Почему это важно

The request is an attempt to break a long deadlock in Japanese-North Korean negotiations over abductees by using the US leader as an intermediary. It suggests Tokyo is willing to accept a summit with Pyongyang if Washington opens a channel first. Whether it leads anywhere depends on a US-North Korea meeting that has not been confirmed and on a response from Trump that has not been made public.
