Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on 6 October that Japan will provide $10 million, or about 1.58 billion yen, in emergency grant aid to Yemen and to Djibouti, the neighbouring country where refugees have fled. Announcing the decision at a press conference, Motegi said the aid would be delivered through international organisations and used for water, food, shelter and other support. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Mainichi reported that the humanitarian situation in Yemen has worsened as fighting intensifies, and that Houthi forces have taken control of cities and islands around the Red Sea, rapidly deteriorating conditions along a route used to supply crude oil to Japan and other countries. Motegi said Japan wants to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East, describing the region as extremely important also from the standpoint of energy security. [ 1 ]

Citing government officials, Mainichi put the number of internally displaced people in Yemen at about 170,000, with roughly 4,000 having crossed the water to Djibouti. NHK framed the announcement around the rebel offensive in Yemen and the two countries' deteriorating humanitarian conditions. [ 1 , 3 ]

The documents do not name the international organisations that will handle the funding, nor give a disbursement schedule or the location of Motegi's press conference. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Почему это важно

Japan is a major importer of crude oil shipped through the Red Sea, and the documents tie the aid decision directly to that supply route. The grant adds Japanese funding to international agencies working on a displacement crisis that has pushed Yemenis across the water into Djibouti.
