A fact-finding team under a South Korean Justice Ministry committee reviewing human rights and prosecutorial conduct plans to report findings on three cases on October 15. Yonhap and Kyunghyang Shinmun identified the cases as the Wirye new-town development case, alleged government-statistics manipulation under the Moon Jae-in administration and the West Sea official shooting case. The committee will consider whether prosecutors infringed human rights or abused their authority. [ 2 , 5 ]
The Wirye case concerns allegations that President Lee Jae-myung provided developers with favours and internal information during the development project. He was indicted on charges including violation of anti-corruption law, but the trial was suspended after he became president, Yonhap reported. The statistics case concerns allegations that officials in the Moon administration manipulated major national statistics. The West Sea case concerns allegations that the administration concealed or downplayed the killing of an official by North Korean troops in 2020 by describing it as a voluntary attempt to defect. [ 2 ]
The committee can examine the findings and recommend further investigation if needed. For completed inquiries, it will consider human-rights violations, abuse of authority and whether prosecutors followed duties of objectivity and fair charging standards, Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. It can recommend measures to the justice minister to prevent recurrence and remedy harm. Reports discuss withdrawal of charges as a possible recommendation if problems are found in Lee-related cases, rather than an action already taken. [ 3 , 5 ]
The panel was launched in June and initially selected seven cases for examination. It later added twelve, bringing the total to nineteen. Newsis reported that the team had received a written response from the Wirye investigation team and had sent questions to the teams handling the statistics and West Sea cases about investigative procedures and internal communications. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported a tentative target of completing the remaining four first-round inquiries next month. [ 3 , 5 ]
Why it matters
The Wirye case involves President Lee Jae-myung, whose trial was suspended after he took office. Reports discuss possible recommendations to withdraw charges if serious problems are found, but no such recommendation has been announced.
