China's three main A-share indexes opened lower on Oct 19, according to CLS, 36Kr, Caixin and China News Service. Caixin reported that the Shanghai Composite opened at 3,694.12, down 0.60%. It said the Shenzhen Component stood at 11,743.22, down 0.50%, and the ChiNext at 2,760.35, down 0.43%. China News Service said more than 4,200 stocks were down. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Sector reports for Oct 19 differed in what they emphasised. CLS said Zhongbing (中兵系) stocks, nonferrous metals (magnesium) and oil and petrochemicals led gains, while publishing, AI corpus and short drama fell. Caixin said banks led gains and electronics led declines. China News Service said semiconductors, electronic components and communications equipment fell while autos rose. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

36Kr said ice-snow tourism, online games and AI corpus stocks fell. It said Jingxue Jieneng (晶雪节能) dropped more than 12%, Bingshan Lengre (冰山冷热) more than 8%, Guomai Wenhua (果麦文化) more than 6% and Ciwen Chuanmei (慈文传媒) more than 5%. Oil and gas extraction and weight-loss drug stocks rose, with *ST Zhunyou (*ST准油) and Hongbo Yiyao (泓博医药) hitting the daily limit up. [ 2 ]

On Oct 20 the indexes again opened lower. CLS, 36Kr and Yicai put the Shanghai Composite down 0.33% and the Shenzhen Component down 0.36%. Caixin gave opening levels of 3,718.44 and 11,774.39. The ChiNext fell 0.50%, and Yicai said the STAR composite index also fell 0.5%. [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]

CLS said glass, vaccine and tire stocks led gains on Oct 20, while AI corpus, precious metals and intellectual property fell. 36Kr said precious metals and shipping led the declines, with Zhaoshang Lunchuan (招商轮船) down more than 4% and Shanjin International (山金国际) down more than 3%. It said food and education led gains. Yicai said media, circuit boards, ice-snow tourism and optical communications were adjusting, agriculture and education were active, and more than 3,300 stocks fell. [ 5 , 6 , 8 ]

Yicai also reported that Sanxia Xincai (三峡新材) resumed trading at the daily limit up. It said the company plans to buy 100% of Zhuhai Saiwei (珠海赛纬), a lithium battery electrolyte company. Yicai quoted Everbright Securities as saying expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes and Middle East geopolitical pressure remain, but that selling pressure has been released after consecutive adjustments. The broker said this makes allocation more attractive, leaves limited room for further adjustment, and means the short-term correction may be near its end. [ 8 ]

Why it matters

The documents are opening-bell reports and give no cause for the declines. Yicai quotes Everbright Securities as saying the short-term correction may be near its end, but that is a single broker's view.
