JR East started its new code payment service teppay on 20 October at 11:00. It is offered inside the Mobile Suica app, which users update and then accept the terms of use, with no separate app to download. The function was being added in stages from that morning. [ 4 , 5 , 7 , 9 , 12 , 15 ]
Suica e-money is capped at 20,000 yen. With identity verification by My Number card, teppay balances of up to 300,000 yen can be used. Main top-up methods include View Card, financial institutions and cash at Seven Bank and Lawson Bank ATMs. Linking a View Card allows payment up to the card's limit without pre-charging. Balances can be sent to family and friends, and JR East said it also has parent-to-child transfers in mind, after users with children asked to pass on transport money. teppay balances can also be used for Ekinet tickets and Mobile Suica commuter passes. The code payment works at JR East group commercial facilities, teppay merchants and more than 1.7 million Smart Code stores, although stores that accept Suica e-money and teppay may differ. Paying from the teppay balance earns 0.5% in teppay points, and View Card linked payments earn 1% in JRE POINT. Nikkei reported that one point is worth one yen. [ 4 , 12 ]
Mobile PASMO is to support teppay in spring 2027, after which balances can be passed between Mobile Suica and Mobile PASMO users. Impress Watch reported that the Mobile Suica app is aiming for 70 million in fiscal 2031 from 45 million now, and that a new Suica app (provisional name) is planned for 2028, with teppay positioned as a preview of it. [ 4 , 6 , 9 , 12 ]
From 4 November, users who enter in advance and make code payments of 500 yen or more get 20% in teppay points, capped at 5,000 points, until 25 December. Bic Camera began handling teppay on 20 October and plans a campaign of up to 15% point return from 4 November, which together with the 20% campaign gives up to 35%. [ 4 , 8 , 14 ]
Outlets framed the launch against existing services. Livedoor News said teppay is meant to compete with PayPay, and NHK said QR code payment is already offered by many companies and competition is intense. ITmedia reported that JR East's manager said the aim is to raise the value of Suica rather than chase PayPay. At a Tokyo press conference, executive officer Tatsuro Makino (牧野達朗) said the 20,000 yen cap on Suica had limited it and teppay widens where it can be used, Nikkei reported. A Nippon TV headline said Mobile Suica was hard to connect because of concentrated access, and that JR East asked users to try again later. [ 5 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]
Why it matters
Outlets describe teppay as a late entrant in a crowded code payment market that includes PayPay. JR East says it aims to raise the value of Suica, which has had a 20,000 yen cap and no transfers.

- Whether teppay will gain ground in the crowded market. Headlines from TBS and Nikkei ask whether teppay can find its strength against PayPay; the documents give no results.
- Whether the 20,000 yen cap on Suica itself will be lifted. A JR East official said in Impress Watch that removal is to be considered in future but that the current approach was judged best for now.
