JR East to start teppay code payment in Mobile Suica on Oct 20, raising limit to ¥300,000
Коротко
JR East said teppay, a code payment service added to the Mobile Suica app, will start on Oct 20 from 11:00, allowing purchases above Suica e-money's ¥20,000 ceiling and transfers of balance between users. Identity verification with a My Number Card raises the payment ceiling to ¥300,000, and a Mobile PASMO version is planned for spring 2027. Mainichi Shimbun described the entry as being on the scale of the industry's leading services, citing Mobile Suica's roughly 45 million issued cards.

JR East said on Oct 6 that it will offer teppay, a new code payment service, from Oct 20. Impress Watch, Keitai Watch, ITmedia News and Mynavi News said the service starts sequentially from 11:00 that day. The function is added to the Mobile Suica app; Sankei Shimbun and Mynavi News said it is applied automatically to existing users, and Keitai Watch reported that existing users need no registration and only have to agree to the terms. The service allows purchases above the ¥20,000 ceiling of Suica e-money and lets users transfer balances between one another, the documents said. Sankei Shimbun said the balance can be charged from a View Card, bank accounts and some convenience store ATMs, while Impress Watch listed the View Card, financial institutions and cash charging at Seven Bank and Lawson Bank ATMs. Impress Watch and Mynavi News said the balance can be moved to Mobile Suica for rail use, spent on commuter passes and tickets, and sent to family and friends. [ 1 , 2 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]
After identity verification with a My Number Card, teppay payments of up to ¥300,000 are possible, and linking a View Card lets users pay up to the card's credit limit without pre-charging. Impress Watch and Mynavi News said payments from the balance earn 0.5% in teppay points and View Card linked payments earn 1% in JRE POINT, with teppay points exchangeable for JRE POINT. [ 1 , 3 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]
The code payment is accepted at JR East group commercial facilities, teppay member stores and more than 1.7 million Smart Code locations nationwide. Mainichi Shimbun said Mobile Suica payments currently work at about 2.35 million stores, a different figure from the teppay locations it and other outlets cited. Impress Watch said the stores accepting teppay may differ from those accepting Suica e-money, and said that issuing a teppay JCB prepaid card in the app would extend use to online payments at JCB merchants in Japan. [ 1 , 9 , 11 , 12 ]
On competition, Mainichi Shimbun said the largest domestic code payment service is PayPay with more than 75 million users, alongside NTT Docomo's d payment, Rakuten Pay and JR West's Wesmo, and that Mobile Suica has issued about 45 million cards, a scale it described as placing JR East among the industry's leading players. Mynavi News also put Mobile Suica issuance at more than about 45 million. [ 11 , 12 ]
At a press conference, JR East president Yoichi Kise said the biggest strength is being able to charge the balance to Mobile Suica and that the company aims for a world in which rail travel and shopping are completed with Suica alone, Sankei Shimbun reported. Mainichi Shimbun quoted him as saying that being connected to the railways is the greatest strength. Sankei Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun said JR East will work to improve convenience, including wider auto-charge functions, and Mainichi Shimbun added that from next spring commuter passes for JR Hokkaido and Okinawa Urban Monorail will become purchasable with Mobile Suica. [ 9 , 11 ]
A Mobile PASMO version is planned for spring 2027, after which balances will be transferable between Mobile Suica and Mobile PASMO users. Keitai Watch and Mynavi News reported a launch campaign from Nov 4 to Dec 25 in which users who enter and pay ¥500 or more by code receive 20% of the amount in limited-period teppay points, capped at 5,000 points. Keitai Watch also listed further campaigns running into 2027, including teppay points for buying or renewing a Mobile Suica student commuter pass, View Card and Bic Camera promotions, and free settlement fees for merchants signing teppay member store contracts by March 31, 2027. Почему это важно
The service moves Suica beyond its ¥20,000 e-money ceiling and, the documents say, onto more than 1.7 million Smart Code locations, widening JR East's payment reach. A planned spring 2027 Mobile PASMO tie-up would let balances move between the two major railway IC wallets. The documents give no market-share data beyond Mobile Suica's issued cards, so the size of the impact cannot be judged from them alone.
