Democrats in the US House of Representatives are preparing broad investigations of Elon Musk if the party regains the House majority in the midterm elections, Yonhap, Newsis and CBS NoCut News reported, citing Politico's report of 20 October (US local time). Politico said House committee chair candidates and Democratic lawmakers are planning congressional probes of Musk, the SpaceX and Tesla chief executive. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Yonhap and CBS NoCut News, the subjects are expected to include Musk's conduct as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), SpaceX's contract with NASA, Tesla's clean-energy subsidies and the recently disputed alleged blocking of Ukraine's military satellite internet service Starshield. Both outlets said Musk gave $276 million (about 370 billion won) to the Republican side for the midterms. CBS NoCut News gave the election date as 3 November. [ 1 , 3 ]

Several Democratic lawmakers were quoted. Pramila Jayapal said that if someone won large government contracts and used them to cut communications in a war the US supports, there were many aspects to corruption around Musk. Greg Meeks said the dismantling of USAID, led by Musk and carried out by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saved taxpayers nothing. Lofgren said DOGE's damage to science agencies needed closer examination. Robert Garcia's office said it has serious questions about Musk's DOGE role and plans to investigate it. Greg Casar said oversight should extend to companies and the ultra-wealthy who tried to corrupt government, adding that Musk is on that list. [ 1 , 3 ]

Yonhap said some lawmakers had already acted. Homeland Security Committee Democrats demanded that Musk testify about a GAO report from last month saying DOGE overstated its cost savings, and the Ways and Means Committee urged an inquiry into a data leak suspected of links to DOGE. Musk's side did not answer Politico's request for comment. [ 1 ]

On 21 October (US time), Musk responded on X, Newsis reported citing Forbes. He wrote that those fighting him should know he would find out who is really behind it, and that he would look for the people behind them, not only the puppets. The central issue, Newsis said, is the alleged restriction of Starlink connections used by Ukraine's military. [ 4 ]

Newsis said the Wall Street Journal, citing US officials and others, reported that Musk ordered Starshield connections cut when Ukrainian drones exceed a certain speed, leaving some attack and interceptor drones effectively unable to function. Accounts differ on who decided. Musk said the US military, and ultimately the US president, decides speed and usage limits. President Donald Trump said he did not know who decided and wanted to find out. Rubio's position is that Musk and SpaceX decide whether Ukraine uses Starlink. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Rubio told him on 21 October the restriction would be lifted. [ 4 ]

Newsis added that Democratic Representative Maxine Dexter criticised wealthy people including Musk for using government contracts to support their own research and profits. Senator Adam Schiff demanded an investigation and testimony from Musk, and Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick backed him. Schiff said such decisions could determine life or death for Ukraine. [ 4 ]

Why it matters

The investigations would depend on the result of the 3 November midterm election, in which Musk gave $276 million to the Republican side. Newsis reports that the Starshield dispute has also drawn calls for an investigation from a Republican House member.
