OpenAI and Google announced a partnership to offer OpenAI's top models and its Codex coding agent on Model Garden, Google Cloud's AI model hub. Yonhap and AI Times say the announcement was made on the 21st US local time, while Newsis says OpenAI announced it on the 22nd. AI Times and Newsis report that a private preview has begun for some enterprise customers and that general availability is planned within weeks. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Yonhap lists the OpenAI models coming to Google Cloud as the top model, the second-tier GPT 6.1 Sol (솔) and the lightweight Luna (루나), and says customers can choose and swap models according to the nature of the task and cost efficiency. AI Times gives the initial models as GPT-6 Astra (아스트라), GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and says companies can choose by task difficulty, cost and response speed. Developers can connect Codex's command-line tool and desktop app to Google Cloud, and OpenAI models are due to enter Google's coding tool Antigravity (안티그래비티) and enterprise AI services. Newsis names the enterprise service as Gemini Agent (제미나이 에이전트). [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

AI Times says the payment arrangement is the commercially important part. Companies can buy OpenAI models on the Google Cloud Marketplace and count the fees toward the Google Cloud spending they have already committed to, and the charges are folded into the Google Cloud bill. The outlet says this reduces the burden of a separate supplier contract and purchasing process. [ 2 ]

On security, AI Times and Newsis report that Google Cloud's access-permission management and data-governance systems will apply to use of the OpenAI models. According to AI Times, Google said it will not use customers' inputs and outputs to train foundation models, and that customers can manage and audit usage records in their existing cloud environment. AI Times describes this as aimed at industries with strict data rules, such as finance and healthcare. [ 2 , 3 ]

Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, said the partnership is an important step in letting customers use OpenAI's best models and Codex in the environments where they are already building AI. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company is focused on giving customers a broad choice of models, including OpenAI's, so they can pick the best fit for each job, get the best quality and cut costs. Yonhap reports that GPT follows Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure onto Google Cloud, making it the second model after Anthropic's Claude to be available on all three major clouds. Yonhap adds that Google Cloud is the only one of the three offering GPT, Claude and Gemini. AI Times says Google stressed it is the only large cloud offering the closed models of all three major companies. AI Times also says OpenAI moved to AWS after its exclusive distribution relationship with Microsoft ended in April, and that Google supplied OpenAI with computing resources under a contract last year. In its announcement, OpenAI stressed that Microsoft remains its most important cloud partner. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

With Google Cloud added, OpenAI's models are available on all three major clouds, according to Yonhap and AI Times. AI Times says customers on Google Cloud can now buy OpenAI models without leaving that environment, while OpenAI must compete with Gemini and Claude on the same platform.
